in a historic building downtown. The reason for this is that they 
attract different kinds of customers. The beach shop may cater more to 
spontaneous tourists and will always have time for walk-ins. The 
downtown shop may not get walk-ins as often, so they focus their efforts
 on building their clientele by working with them on custom pieces. 
Their clients often set up their next appointment when they are getting 
tattooed, and these artists may be booked out a month in advance—or 
more.</div>

 in an unusual style, seek out an artist who displays work done in that

I heard a story about somebody who had a preference for an obscure 
and specific style. His method for finding an artist was to print out a 
picture of the style of tattoo he was looking for and ask the artist if 
they recognized it. If they said yes, he would continue the 
conversation. Very effective!</div>

The short answer is yes. It does hurt to get a tattoo.<br />

When you're sitting for a tattoo, a specially designed tattoo needle 
pierces through your skin at approximately 10-15 needle drops per 
second, fast enough to avoid puncturing the skin and causing bleeding 
and slow enough to avoid tearing the skin.<br />

Your skin has three layers, the epidermis, the dermis and the 
hypodermis. Because the epidermis is constantly replenishing itself, the
 tattoo needle needs to penetrate through the dermis layer to make the 
tattoo permanent. For this to occur, the tip of the needle attached to 
the tattoo machine is entering your skin layers approximately 1/16" of 
an inch.</div>

Which Part of the Body Hurts the Most?</h2>

Though
 everyone is different and can withstand different amounts of pain, 
there are some areas of the body where getting a tattoo is not as 
painful as other locations. Keep in mind that the pain you will 
experience is relative to you. If you're sensitive to pain, and your 
desired area for a tattoo is known to be painful, it might make sense to
 choose a different location.<br />

Least Amount of Pain Body Locations</h2>
The least irritating places to get tattoos are:<br />

<ul>
<li>Upper outside of arm and outer forearm</li>
<li>Inner wrist</li>
<li>Calves</li>
<li>Shoulders</li>
<li>Upper back (excluding spine area)</li>
<li>Top and outer thigh</li>
</ul>
These areas have relatively few nerve endings, and more muscle and fat which will cushion the needle from the bone.<br />

Medium Amount of Pain or Mixed Reviews</h2>
In some of these parts of the body, there is a lot of movement like 
the ankle and inner arm and may take longer for them to heal. Some 
people report these areas as being very painful, and others don't. It 
just depends on your body. If you are thinner, you'll probably find 
these areas more painful.<br />

Some more sensitive or painful parts of the body to tattoo are:<br />

<li>Inner arm (with exceptions)</li>
<li>Centre back</li>
<li>Head</li>
<li>Lower back</li>

There are some areas that are known to generally be very painful to 
tattoo. Make sure you're prepared to withstand it before getting the 
tattoo! Tattooing directly on bony bits like the elbow or knees can be 
torturous. You feel as though the whole bone is vibrating and sometimes 
the adjoining bone too.<br />

Furthermore, the healing process can be just as painful as getting 
the tattoo itself and you might need to take some time off from your 
usual routine.<br />

The most sensitive parts of the body to tattoo are:<br />

<li>Stomach</li>
<li>Back of knees</li>
<li>Armpit</li>
<li>Inside of elbow</li>
<li>Nipples</li>

The Do's of Getting a Tattoo and Minimizing Pain</h2>

<li>Have a good, filling meal at least an hour before your tattoo begins.</li>
<li>Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration before and during the tattoo session.</li>
<li>Wear comfortable clothing for sitting a long time and a piece of

<li>Sleep a full night's sleep the night before (no big parties!)</li>
<li>Take some mild pain killers like paracetamol with you just in case (avoid aspirin and other drugs that can thin the blood).</li>
<li>Ask your artist about skin-numbing creams and if they recommend them for you or not.</li>
<li>Listen to what your tattoo artist advises regarding aftercare; they usually know best.</li>
<li>Bring lollies, breath mints, and food to munch on during the session to keep your energy levels up.</li>
<li>Have a shower and wash before you go. Don't overdo the perfume or deodorant.</li>
<li>Bring some music and earphones in case you want to zone out.</li>
<li>Consider your tattoo to be similar to a minor medical procedure and go easy on your body afterwards.</li>
<li>Have an effective aftercare routine in mind and have the necessary 
antibacterial soaps and cream and lotions purchased before you get your 
tattoo as you'll need them within an hour of finishing your tattoo 
session.</li>

The Do Not's</h2>
<ul>
<li>Avoid drinking alcohol the night before your tattoo as it thins 
the blood and hinders the body's natural ability to seal a wound and 
prevent infections.</li>
<li>Avoid drinking more than one coffee the morning before your tattoo since it also thins the blood.</li>
<li>If you don't know what design you really want, don't get a tattoo!</li>
<li>If you don't see clean equipment and new needles at the parlor, don't go through with the tattoo.</li>
<li>Don't get a tattoo when you are sick. You could infect other people and your body won't be able to heal itself as well.</li>
<li>Don't drink or take drugs before your tattoo session as they increase heart rate and thin the blood.</li>
<li>Avoid taking more than one person with you for support. Getting a 
tattoo is not that emotionally damaging and space at the studio is often
 limited.</li>
<li>Don't have a heap of photos taken of your tattoo in action. It could distract the artist and they may make an error.</li>

How Long Will My Tattoo Take?</h2>

Sitting for your tattoo is not generally very much fun, though it can be exciting.<br />

Tattoo sessions last for three to four hours on average.Generally, 
this is a standard session for both the client and the artists comfort 
equally. Keep in mind, they are bending over you, grasping a tattoo 
machine for as long as you're sitting there getting tattooed. This is 
enough time that both the client and the artist, should be able to stay 
relatively comfortable.<br />

Once a person has experienced getting a tattoo, it's not uncommon for
 them to sit for longer lengths of time. However, this can (in some 
cases) be counter-productive since the skin can experience greater 
trauma, which hinders healing and might need touch-ups later on.<br />

If your design is very small it could be finished in as little as 20 
minutes. Even so, you will most likely be charged at a full hour's rate 
to cover the costs of the studio, artist and equipment used since the 
set-up cost is pretty much the same whether it's a 20-minute or two-hour
 tattoo.<br />

Large, detailed designs can take multiple sittings and many hours. 
For the more dedicated, a long session can go anywhere from five to 
eight hours. However, if it's tattooed for too long, the body will often
 go into shock. You might notice you're shivering and that the tattoo 
hurts a lot more than it did half an hour ago. When this happens, it's 
time to go home. You've hit the wall and you're only going to go 
downhill from here.<br />

However, as in most situations in this crazy thing called life, 
everyone is unique; people will be able to sit for varying lengths of 
time before they hit the proverbial wall.<br />

What Happens During a Tattoo Session?</h2>
Your session could either be in a private cubicle or in an open room 
with other artists and clients. You can request a privacy screen if you 
feel uncomfortable with other people around or if you have to reveal a 
private area while getting a tattoo.<br />

No matter the setup, you can be sure that you won't be moving around 
for quite some time. The artist will position you on a bed or chair that
 is similar to what you might see in a doctor's or dentist's office and 
is usually covered in plastic wrap for cleanliness.<br />

You'll need to maintain your position for as long as the artist needs
 you to in order to finish the design. That said, do let the artist know
 if you're cramping or begin to experience any discomfort. They might be
 able to work with you in order to find a more comfortable position.</div>

 of my favorite questions from folks who see my tattoos and haven't 
gotten any themselves, is; "Doesn't it hurt to get tattooed?"<br />

YES! It hurts a lot actually, but it's not the sort of unbelievable 
pain that cannot be pushed through. I'd say it's worse than get torn up 
by a cat, but not as bad as an infected tooth. That's just my frame of 
reference though, as I'm sure there are many others out there. Now, that
 being said, just because the pain is bearable, doesn't mean there 
aren't ways to lessen the amount of pain you might experience.<br />

No, you're never going to get out of all of the pain, unless you 
happen to have already gone through some misfortune that left you numb 
in a really large area, and since most of us have not had that happen, 
there's going to be some amount of pain with your tattoo. Now, there are
 several factors that are involved with lessening the pain of your 
tattoo, but the best and most traditional method that we're going to 
focus on, is where on your body you decide to get your tattoo. </div>

if you have to twist your back and legs in crazy positions in order to 
get that tattoo, which will totally defeat the purpose of choosing this

 are some other options that I want to briefly highlight in this hub. 
They are not the most popular of options, for their own reasons, but 
they are still options non the less, and you might like them.<br />

<strong>Fingernail Tattoos</strong> - Fingernail tattoos, unlike <em>fingernail bed</em>
 tattoos, are considered to be the only truly pain-free tattoos. The 
only complication with this is that they will eventually fade into 
oblivion, usually within a year.<br />

<strong>Teeth Tattoos</strong> - There are not many folks out there 
who really want to get their teeth tattooed, but should you decide to do
 so, you're looking at a pretty pain free option as long as your teeth 
are in good health.<br />

<strong>Earlobe Tattoos</strong> - Getting the earlobe tattooed is 
no worse than getting it pierced, and probably hurts less since you're 
not completely puncturing. The only real downsides to this is that it 
will be weird having a tattoo machine so close to your head and earlobe 
tattoos tend to wear out sooner than other less exposed areas of skin.</div>

Initially, you probably thought a tattoo was a one-off opportunity, 
and technically that is the case. Luckily, there are truly talented 
tattoo artists currently working within the industry worldwide. So 
bearing that in mind, there is the hope that maybe you could get a 
fantastic cover-up done.<br />

No matter why you've changed your mind about the tattoo design—you've
 grown up a decade or two, or possibly the once-love of your life, Candy
 or Gavin, has now evolved into a psychopathic stalker whom you stay 
very, very far away from—having a horrible tattoo sucks.<br />

Wanting to get rid of or disguise a second-rate tattoo is not 
unusual. There are even tattoo artists and studios that specialise in

You must keep in mind, there are limitations on covering up an old 
tattoo. But there are many success stories of people who now love their

Understanding How a Tattoo Cover-Up Works</h2>

When
 your tattoo was first done, the ink was deposited approximately one 
millimetre beneath the skin, into the dermis, which is the layer below 
the epidermis (the skin you see).<br />

As your cover-up gets tattooed, the new ink is also deposited within 
the dermis, along with the old coloured ink. The pigment in the new inks
 does not go over the top of the old tattoo's pigment; rather the two 
colours combine to make a new colour, although the stronger or 
darker-coloured ink becomes dominant in the mixture. For example, red 
and blue ink mixed together make purple, underneath the skin or 
elsewhere.<br />

Black is the most effective colour to cover up an old tattoo. 
Although, of course, a black-ink tattoo is not very attractive, and you 
may think you may as well have kept your old, horrible tattoo.<br />

When a tattoo artist is designing a tattoo cover-up, they consider 
the colour in the old tattoo, and how it will mix with the new ink's 
colour. Talented tattoo artists work out a strategy for placing the new 
design and colours over the old one.<br />

A good rule of thumb: A darker shade of a colour can cover itself. So
 lime green can be covered with emerald green, and light blue with royal
 blue or purple.</div>

and major features of your design. This gives them a reference for the 
areas of the tattoo that need a heavier cover-up design.</li>
<li>Put the outline on a light table and place another piece of thin tracing paper over the top.</li>
<li>Begin designing your cover-up tattoo, working around the faint outline of your old tattoo, to camouflage the areas that need it.</li>
</ol>
A talented cover-up tattoo artist will incorporate the old 
design, rather than obliterate it: for example, developing scripting 
into flowing stalks or vines. By creating contrast and interesting 
design flourishes around the darker areas, the artist draws the eye away
 from the parts of the old tattoo being covered up.<br />

Often tattoos that are designed as cover-ups are around thirty 
percent larger than the first tattoo. This way, the darker areas of the 
design can camouflage the old tattoo, and lighter colours can be used on
 virgin skin, deceiving the eye into believing the cover-up tattoo is 
the only tattoo that has ever been there.</div>

percentage to 30%, although scarring from over-working the skin would be
 a valid concern.</li>
<li>Fading the old tattoo through laser removal can aid in an effective cover-up.</li>

 a person loves their design but hates the colours. Changing just the 
colours can be done by using darker inks—although there is a risk this 
may make the old tattoo look even worse.<br />

When changing the colours, your tattoo artist must consider the 
merging of the pigments in the ink. Not all colours can be changed into 
another colour. Of course, light colours can be darkened, for example:<br />

<ul>
<li>a lavender can be changed into a purple,</li>
<li>pink to magenta,</li>
<li>blue to purple,</li>
<li>red to brown,</li>
<li>and yellow to green.</li>
</ul>
<em>NOTE: </em>A tattoo in the process of healing will slightly 
change colours. Do not panic just yet if your tattoo is still quite new;
 give it some time to settle down.</div>

<strong>On the journey home from your tattoo session</strong><br />

Your tattoo artist should wrap your fresh tattoo with cling film 
before you leave the studio. Laws in many countries specify that a 
freshly completed tattoo must be covered entirely with a sterile bandage
 that is securely taped down with medical adhesive (tape).<br />

<strong>Whilst in bed, during sleep</strong><br />

When you are asleep. While you are sleeping you might lay on your 
tattoo, or let the bed linen lay on your tattoo. This is an opportunity 
for bacteria, dust or fluff to enter the new tattoo, possibly causing an
 infection.<br />

Wrapping your tattoo will also protect it from being accidentally scratched while you're asleep.<br />

<strong>When wearing tight or irritating clothing</strong><br />

Choose clothing that is not too tight and irritating. Sleeves or 
cuffs with elastic can easily catch on edges of skin and scabs, ripping 
them off. If you must wear a certain clothing item that could rub or 
irritate your new tattoo, wrap your tattoo with a hygienic bandage for 
protection.<br />

<strong>When in a crowd or playing a contact sport</strong><br />

A clean bandage is the best protection for your tattoo when in a 
crowd, or playing a contact sport. Any knocks or hits directly to your 
tattoo can cause damage. You are best to try to avoid these activities.<br />

<strong>When in a dirty environment</strong><br />

In effect, your new tattoo is an open wound. If you work in an 
especially filthy workplace, or have to go to the garbage tip for 
example, wrap your tattoo for protection.<br />

The reality is that cling film or cling wrap is cheap, easily 
available and actually does do the job of blocking access from any 
external dirt, airborne antibodies or germs. Unfortunately, bacteria is a
 stubborn little amoeba that can enter a wound as if by magic. If the 
micro-climate is ideal, they will multiply and breed, causing infection 
within the tattoo.</div>

new tattoo with cling film for your journey home, make it a quick 
journey. The plastic layer is used as a protective film to safeguard the
 fresh tattoo from airborne particles and micro-organisms.<br />

The very nature of plastic is that it seals firmly around whatever it
 is applied to and seals it off. In doing this, though, the plastic wrap
 also limits any air from getting in or out. Fresh air is required for 
tattoos to heal naturally.<br />

When cling film is wrapped around a freshly inked tattoo, it causes 
plasma, excess ink and fluids to pool within the tattoo area. This is 
extremely dangerous as it creates the perfect environment for bacteria 
to breed. Cling film interrupts the development in the top layers of the
 epidermis of dry, crusty skin that will typically flake off.<br />

<em>Once an air vacuum is created within the plastic film, the 
surface temperature of the skin can reach temperatures of up to 103 
degrees: the ideal environment for bacteria to breed and grow, in fact a
 party that all its friends will come to. Bacteria can develop into 
heart-breaking, tattoo-damaging infections. </em>Using cling film is 
better than not wrapping your tattoo at all. If you do use cling film to
 wrap your tattoo, use it for short periods.</div>

Tips to Minimise Bruising and Swelling</h2>

<strong>1. Apply a cold compress to the swollen area.</strong><br />

This can be as simple as a pack of frozen peas or a cool washcloth. 
Don't apply frozen compresses or ice directly to the skin. Instead, wrap
 the cold element in a clean, fluff-free material like cheesecloth or 
muslin cloth. Leave the compress on the swollen area for about 30 
minutes. This will reduce blood flow and limit bleeding into the skin, 
thus reducing bruising and swelling. It will also alleviate pain and 
inflammation and speed up the healing process.<br />

<strong>2. Elevate the part of the body with the swollen tattoo.</strong><br />

Keep the swollen tattoo above your heart if possible, it may help to 
lay down. Body areas below the heart, have a higher probability of blood
 flow into the area, increasing bruising and swelling.<br />

You should attempt to keep the tattoo raised whenever possible for the first 24 hours.<br />

Right now, your tattoo is essentially an open wound that will be 
healing over the next four to six weeks. As the skin heals, it is 
completely normal for a tattoo to have some light scabbing or have 
white, flaky skin develop over it. At this point it time, it is usually 
extremely itchy as well. This is all good, however. It means that your 
skin is repairing itself.<br />

So if you've got light scabs, you're good! Just make sure you don't 
pick or scratch them off and your tattoo should continue healing nicely.

It is not normal to develop gigantic scabs, however, though this also
 means that your tattoo is healing. Heavy scabbing can occur when:<br />

<li>Proper aftercare procedures were not followed immediately after getting the tattoo</li>
<li>You've developed an infection</li>
<li>Your tattoo artist was too heavy handed or repeatedly passed over the same area of a tattoo and excessively damaged the skin </li>

How to Deal with Huge Scabs on Your Tattoo</h2>

If
 you have large, multi-layered, crusty, mountainous scabs on your 
tattoo, you need to be sure to take care of them because knocking them 
off, picking, or scratching at them can cause your tattoo to look patchy
 and have spots where the ink hasn't taken.<br />

Your scabs need to stay dry in order to shrink and crumble off, and 
your tattoo needs to stay moist so that skin can continue to heal. Your 
job is to find a happy medium between these two points.<br />

Here's how:<br />

<ul>
<li>Avoid applying lotions or creams to the scab itself. If you're 
apply cream to your tattoo, go around the scabs as much as possible.</li>
<li>Do not pick or scratch at the scabs. Ink often sits within them and 
gradually leaches back into the skin over one or two weeks. If you pick 
them off, you risk losing color in your tattoo.</li>
</ul>
If, after two weeks, you've found you still have gigantic scabs,
 there are some measures that you can take. If you have any concerns or 
questions, however, your first resource should always be your artist or 
studio where you got your tattoo done. Talk to them before you try 
anything on your tattoo. Once you get their okay and their reassurance 
that the tattoo isn't infected, try the following:<br />

<ul>
<li>After your typical showering routine, let warm water run over 
your scabs as they soak up the water. Pat them dry with a clean towel 
when you're finished. This will help the scabs shrink and peel as they 
dry out over time.</li>
<li>For larger, more stubborn scabs, lay a face washer or face cloth 
over the tattoo for the first few minutes of your typical shower 
routine. This will help the scab soak up water and speed up the drying 
and lifting of the edges of the scab afterwards.</li>
<li>When dealing with scabs that just won't begin to crumble and fall 
off (if they're still there after three weeks) once you have laid your 
face washer over the scab and it is reasonably waterlogged, very gently,
 with a cupped palm full of antibacterial wash or soap,<em> </em>roll 
your hand over the scab whilst the warm water is still running. This 
will slightly help the edges start to lift away, but you must do it 
gradually. NOTE: This process is quite risky. Only do it for a few 
seconds and no more than twice a day. It is a last resort and done at 
your own discretion as potential loss of color is high.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Always pat dry with a clean, hygienic towel. Do not rub or agitate the scab with a towel or a face washer</li>
<li>It is recommended that you try any of the above suggestions for only
 a few seconds at a time. Excessive actions to remove the scabs could 
have an adverse effect and damage your tattoo.</li>

<li>Protect the tattoo from dust or other tiny particles that might enter the fresh wound.</li>

During the first day or so after you get your tattoo, normal 
skin will secrete a yellowish substance called plasma, which is the 
fluid that creates scabs. It will also secrete small amounts of ink and

Here are some things you should do right off the bat to keep scabbing to a minimum:<br />

<li>Use an anti-bacterial foam wash, especially one intended for

 scabs are not necessarily a sign of infection but might be a sign of 
it. If you're not sure, here are some other tell-tale signs of tattoo 
infection:<br />

<li>Pain increases after 48 hours instead of decreasing</li>
<li>Severe inflammation that persists after three days. If your tattoo 
feels hot to the touch, or you feel heat or itchiness radiating from the
 tattoo, it could be a sign of an infection.</li>
<li>Redness that increases instead of decreases. Thin red lines 
streaking out from the tattoo are is a sure sign of infection; if you 
see red lines, go to a doctor immediately because you could have blood 
poisoning.</li>
<li>Serious or uneven swelling, especially when accompanied by fluid-filled boils, or pustules.</li>
<li>Foul-smelling discharge or pus is also a sure sign of infection.</li>
<li>Body aches, fever, or general malaise that is unrelated to another illness.</li>
<li>Scabs that are filled with a yellow or green fluid, or scabs that smell.</li>
</ul>
If you suspect you might have an infection but aren't quite 
sure, go to the tattoo artist and have them take a look at your work. 
They've seen hundreds (probably thousands) of tattoos and will be able 
to tell you right away if you have a problem. If they recommend it, you 
should go see a doctor and follow all the instructions he or she gives
